Yet another thing that gets me on my soapbox

So, I was reading WWdN in exile, and came across his ranting about a set of parents taking their children to an innapropriate movie…so much so, that a person he works with wrote an open letter to them and put it on the filmwad site.

Parents taking their children to innapropriate movies has always irked me. From the minute a parent took her 5, yes 5 kids, all under the age of 6 to see the Truman Show, because she wanted to see it,a nd they talked through the entire thing, threw candy and popcorn, and were so disinterested that I asked the mother if she had any common sense in her head ,  this has bothered me.

If your child is an infant…you know, the kind where you can stick them in a carrier (snuggli, sling, whatever) and they’ll sit and sleep through a movie, fine. BUT, when they are old enough to really grasp what is going on, QUIT IT.

We took Isaac to his first movie in April. Prior to that, we forwent anything on the movie circut, because 1) babysitting issues, and 2) we didn’t want to ruin the movie experience for any other patrons.  It’s called courtesy.

The parents in question in the open letter took their 1 and 4 year old children to see (ready?) Hostel II. Violent, gory, nasty. Even my horror movie loving self can’t even BEAR to sit through even 5 minutes of the first Hostel! That’s how violent it is!

at 1 and 4, a child has a sense of what is going on around them. They are uniquely attuned to what is in their environment and what is safe and not so safe.

As I read the open letter, my eyes bugged out of my head, and my jaw hit the floor.

What the hell were these parents thinking? I’d really like to know.

soapbox over.

It’s just amazing to me that people would bring their young children to see that kind of movie!! IF I’m going to bring Celia to a movie, it will be the first showing of the day, in hopes not to disturb as many people. And only an age appropriate movie at that! We took Celia to see Shrek the Third, and she was SO good! She sat still, ate her popcorn, and was completely engaged in the movie. Now the year before, we were desparate to do something during open houses, so we took her to see Ice Age 2, and she was really good (as long as the M&Ms kept coming). We went back a few weeks later to see The Wild, and she was bad- so we left 20 minutes into the movie…and didn’t try again until it was Shrek, and she really wanted to see it.

If a movie like Hostel would give me nightmares, I can’t imagein what a 1 or 4 year old would have! That’s just wrong on so many levels. Wow. If they want to see a movie that badly, find a sitter, or ask a friend with kids to swap and you’ll return the favor in a few weeks.
