This just irks me

I was over on Yahoo this morning, and was peeking at the news and noticed an article regarding a girl being disqualfied from running in a track meet because of her unitard that covers her head. She’s Muslim, and she loves to run, so she had this made so that she could still observe her faith and run all at the same time.

What irks me about this is that she is a senior. She’s worn this unitard for 3 years, and no one has said boo about it. How can you let it ride for 3 years and then all of a sudden, right before she’s about to run, she gets told her unitard is NOT ok?

I rarely play the religion/race card, but I’m playing it here. It seems that this was arbitrarily enforced, because the sponsoring body that disqualified her KNEW this was a religious thing. They let it ride for 3 years. How can this not be total discrimination?

We are in 2008. When is the plain stupidity going to stop and people be judged for their ability and their worth, rather than their religion and their race? Cripes, Islam is not a religion to be feared. The hajib and covering rules prevent the women from being viewed as a sex object. You look at their internal worth rather than their hair or body.

Argh. It’s just irritating.

Here’s the article.

it just irritates me to no end.

I totally agree. IMHO, the time to complain was 3 years ago. Why start now?
