Election Day, 2008-what’s the dealio?

November 4, 2008 at 9:39 am 2 comments

Election days have always been the most fun by far in my house. Seriously. We were taught to think politically minded from an early age and were taught to think for ourselves-look outside party lines and really look at where the candidates stood on the issues.

This year is no different. It’s a critical election and although some things have stayed the same, others have changed…prompting me to say “Huhwha?”

This year, the things that have stayed the same are the following:

  • Dad has called the colors for the election night map coloring. They are : Old and out of touch grey for McCain and the green of hope and vitality for Obama.
  • I’ve got maps for everyone and markers/crayons for us.
  • I know the bunch of us will stay up (even though I’ve got to OPEN tomorrow morning…) coloring the maps

Now, for the differences…

My Dad, although seriously political, has never gone this far in his endorsement of a candidate

He got an Obama shirt. I'm flabbergasted...

and then even further past the Obama shirt…he did this:

He put a campaign sign on his lawn...

He has never done this in recent memory. I’ve never seen the guy this energized over any election…well, the coloring and cackling during the first Clinton election comes sorta close, but not as big as this. I’m just completely all flabbergasted.

So, here’s my take:

Go vote. I’m an Obama girl all the way. I can’t stand another out of touch president who will screw over education like W has. Take a look at every teacher left in its wake No Child Left Behind. This has made teachers lives a living nightmare. It has NOT improved student scores at all. There are better ways to do this. Then, there’s Iraq-we need to get out NOW. We shouldn’t have been there in the first place, but since we are there, we need to GET OUT. Then, there’s that Sarah Palin. Lord love a duck. That woman needs to be smacked into reality. Although she is a good sport for being on SNL…and Tina Fey does the best Palin impression EVER….

It’s 2008-let’s do what I was always taught. Look past color, party lines and the fear that grips a nation at election time. Let’s get out there, vote and change the country.

and as my closing for today on this most fun of election days…I present what we watched with Isaac this morning…and Isaac laughed as I sang all of the song…

Thanks for the shout out re: NCLB! It *is* bad for teachers, but it is really really bad for kids. They are the ones who truly suffer. We need accountability, but it needs to be realistic and kept in perspective. We need to teach kids skills for life, not just to pass a test next March.

    Obama 08!!!
